2011 VANCOUVER METRO BASKETBALL LEAGUE // PLAYOFFS: ROUND 1 RECAP!!!

GAME OF THE 1ST ROUND:

Team Sonic Boom 77 – Team Still Ballin 76

This first round game was close the entire game!  Neither team led by double digits at any time!  With Will Chiang out of the country, the team’s new Big 3  of: Ian Pierre-Louis, Seiji Suzuki, and Frank Liu anchored Sonic Boom!  Not to be out done was Still Ballin’s Brandon Chancey, Ryan Fraser, “Orange” Juice Jarqun, and Jens Cutty were looking for the W!

A first half duel broke out between Sonic Boom’s Frank Liu and Still Ballin’s Brandon Chancey, both ending the first half with 11 each!  Ballin’s Ryan Fraser vs Seiji Suzuki both had 9, and “Orange” Juice Jarqun and Ian “Jumpin’ Jack” Pierre-Louis had 7 apiece!

The 2nd half was equally as close with Sonic Boom holding a slight lead through most of the 2nd half.  Sonic Boom’s Liu and Suzuki absolutely dominated with a combined 25 points in the 2nd half, but Boom’s Connor Rockandel anchored the inside play with 6 second half points!  Just when you thought the game was over, Brandon Chauncey began to catch fire!  While Sonic Boom was firing on all cylinders, Still Ballin’s Chauncey was scorching the net with 19 second half points, including 4 second half 3 pointers.  With less than 30 seconds left, Ryan Fraser hit a clutch three to cut the lead to 1 point!  Sonic Boom was able to run out the clock and escape with a 1 point victory.

Brandon Chancey led all scores with 31 points including six 3 pointers!  Frank Liu had a team high 23 points, while Seiji Suzuki ended with 22 points.

Team Stallions 86 – Team Vancouver Prep 48

The Stallions got off to their usual slow start, but with Van Prep couldn’t capitalize on it.  Due to missing players and injuries to key players, Van Prep just didn’t have the firepower to make this into a game.  Roger Sheung, Brian Host, and Luis Ayala combined for 71 of the Stallions 86 points!

Brad Derksen led Van Prep with 16 points.  Jasmin Demirovic had 5 points including a 1st half 30 foot 3 pointer, but that was all of the highlights for Van Prep until late in the 2nd half!  A dust up involving T.J. and Roger Sheung looked to be more smoke than fire in the end, but it sure looked like an explosion at the beginning.

Team Nike 58 – Team J-Wai 47

With Anthony “#22″ Lao back in the lineup after suffering an ankle injury a few weeks ago, the odds for a Team Nike win dramatically increased!  Team J-Wai has been an upset contender all season long, and looked to surprise Team Nike on this night.  Both teams started off with the playoff jitters missing point blank layups and having a slew of turnovers!

Some where midway through the 1st half, Julio and Mr Lao carried Team Nike on their collective backs!  Jacky “If That Is Your Real Name” Chan of J-Wai did his best impression of “Super Cop” scoring a team high 15 points, but Nike was too much on this night!

Anthony Lau had a game high 20 points, Julio chipped in 17 points, Matt Anza and Joe Tozzi both had 9 points.  J-Wai’s Jimmy Fok had 8, and Jeremy chan added 6 points in the loss.

Team YM 48 – Team War Pigs 37

After strong showings in their last three regular season games, Team War Pigs just couldn’t put it together on Monday!  Scoring a season low 37 points, War Pigs didn’t give themselves much of a chance at victory.  Not to take away from Team YM, because their defense was all out for the whole game!  Full court pressing and trapping on made and missed baskets forced War Pigs into a number of unforced turnovers and rushed shots.
